The ground thundered under Nimrod's hooves as they approached the first fence, a downhill log. Neveah supported Nimrod's head, and helped him over the difficult jump. You'd think she would be ecstatic, after the dressage part, she was in first place for the Young Rider's Eventing Championships. The dressage had been amazing, Nimrod was so attentive and supple. They'd finished with only 30 penalties. The second place horse and rider team had 50! But Neveah was not happy. She had argued with her parents for so long. They had wanted her in this competition so badly, but Neveah new that neither she nor Nimrod were in good enough condition to tackle the massively difficult Young Rider's Eventing Championships. She had fought them all year, and nearly every night she had cried herself to sleep, her parents yelling still in her ears. Why did she and Nimrod have to be so good? If they weren't, then maybe her parents wouldn't pressure her so much.
Half way through the course, Neveah could feel Nimrod tiring. He was flattening out over the jumps, and his ears were no longer pricked eagerly. Neveah wasn't doing so well either. When they had jumped into the water, she had nearly come off. But Neveah gritted her teeth and went on. If she pulled up, she would never hear the end of it from her parents. There were only two jumps left, a massive Trekenner fence, and then an uphill bounce. They would make it, they had to. Nimrod started breathing heavily ten strides before the jump. Neveah knew he would not have enough impulsion to make it over, so for the first time in her two years of owning him, Neveah struck Nimrod with her crop. The horse leapt ahead, messed up his striding, and before Neveah even knew what had happened, Nimrod's front legs flew into the ditch, his neck snapped back against the rails, and she flew off, landing unconscious on the other side of the fence.
